A low glycemic-index meal immediately before prolonged strenuous exercise is found to prolong endurance by inducing less hyperglycaemia and thus avoiding an insulin surge, lower levels of plasma lactate before and during exercise, and by maintaining plasma glucose and free fatty acids at higher levels during exercise.
