It is advisable to remove any SO2 in excess of 50 ppm (i.e. 10 times the amount shown by experience to be optimum). A considerable proportion of the SO2 liberated by steaming out can be removed from basic material treated with SO2. The sample examined contained 526 mg/l SO2. Ca. 95 % of the total SO2 could be expelled by boiling and N2 perfusion. After treatment with expansion cyclone the original H2SO3 content was reduced to 30 %.
